In spite of all the warnings, incidents and protests, most of the people who make their livings from animal experiments adhere to their activities. Instead of recognizing and correcting the mistakes in their way of thinking, new animal testing centers have been, and are being, built at many German universities: in Mannheim, Jena, Erlangen and Würzburg.
The center in Erlangen cost 25 million euros to build, in Würzburg at least 31 million euros. In contrast to this a maximum of 4 million euros is available in all of Germany for research projects not using animals. This is an alarming signal.
Again we are being promised that researchers are concerning themselves with our health and well-being. But what will the balance look like in 10, 20 or 30 years? Can it be any different if nothing fundamental has changed? Or will it be even more bitter than now?
